They really are the most comprehensive health monitoring scales we’ve tested. Right now, there is nothing else quite like the Withings Body Scan on the market.

Always check with your doctor if there’s anything you are concerned about, rather than relying on the scales. We can’t comment too much on the accuracy of the heart and nerve health metrics, but Withings says that this is a clinically validated device. We’d recommend using the numbers as a guide, and to see the trends, which are likely to accurately reflect any changes in your body composition.ĭuring testing, we did find the Body Scan scales were consistent with their readings, with weight and body composition measurements routinely in line with one another, rather than seeing large fluctuations. However, without directly comparing them with a gold standard DEXA scan (or equivalent), we still hesitate to say how accurate these are. In other words, the handle allows for a more precise measurement in each part of the body – so the readings should be more accurate as a result. When we asked Withings about this, a spokesperson told us: “ Because Body Scan has the handle and measure segmental body composition it will differ from the Body Comp reading…the handle of Body Scan enables a current to be sent to the whole body instead of just in the lower part of the body as Body Comp is doing.” However, there was much closer agreement with the Omron scales, which also have a handle. There was greater variance in the body composition readings, with differences of up to 6% between the Body Scan and Body Comp. And in terms of weight accuracy, they were never more than 100g (3.5oz) different from the measurements we got from the Body Comp scales. It’s less than a minute if you turn off the ECG function.īody Scan can measure your weight to within 50g (just under 2oz) making them among the most precise scales we’ve tested. If you include the 30 seconds it takes to perform an ECG, then you can get all your readings in under 90 seconds. Step on, pick up the handle, rest your thumbs on the electrodes, and wait. Withings Body Scan Performance Top-notchĭespite the handles, these scales are still easy to use. None of that is hidden behind a paywall, and we applaud Withings for this. If you don’t want to use Health Plus, you can still access all the other aspects of the Health Mate app including all your health data. The cost of this is harder to justify, especially if you’ve just spent £400 on the Body Scan scales themselves. It offers educational modules to help users achieve goals around diet, sleep and activity.

You can subscribe to Health Plus for £9.95 a month, or £99.50 a year. The new segmental analysis for body composition is presented very clearly and can even compare you with other Withings users of similar age and height. It’s a consistently excellent app, which allows you to sync data from any Withings devices you may own, such as a ScanWatch, or the Sleep Analyzer.

It provides more advice to support you in understanding the numbers, and ways to reach your goals. It’s a simple app, easy to use, and displays the data clearly. The Health Mate app pulls everything together and is one of the strongest parts of Withings’ offering. When you step on them, you’ll notice that the scales will buzz periodically to let you know when the measurements have started and ended. Withings recommends that these are used on a hard surface, and therefore no carpet feet are included.

The handle enables an electric current to travel from hands to feet, which, in theory, provides a more accurate measurement of your body composition. There’s also the addition of the handle and the cable which enable these scales to measure segmental body composition and ECG (more on these later). They are larger than other Withings scales at 327mm x 327mm x 18mm (12.8in x 12.8in x 0.7in), and considerably heavier (weighing around 4kg, or 8.8lb). The handle is comfortable to hold, and the braided cable also feels pretty sturdy. They feel extremely solid, well-made and durable. Withings has a clear design philosophy with its scales, which it has incorporated into the Body Scan. The Body Scan scales have a tempered glass top, and the black finish is very sleek – although they do quickly attract dust and fingerprints. These are a typically stylish offering from Withings.
